NEPTUNE: dc power beyond MARS
نویسندگان
چکیده
The modular power converter designed for the Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS), and recently successfully tested by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the University of Washington, is a significant milestone in the development of regional cabled observatories. The ability to transmit up to 10kW reliably over long distances using 10kV direct current (dc) and convert it to a more usable 400V dc locally will open up new possibilities for the science community. For future projects covering several hundreds of kilometers and using multiple power converters, high reliability will be crucial. Some evolution of the design is therefore essential. The intention for the NEPTUNE project is to build on the MARS achievements to the point where the converter is a fully industrialized unit built to submarine telecom standards. The JPL/MARS system includes a redundant converter available via a medium voltage switch. With relatively minor circuit changes the converter reliability can be increased so that a single converter could be more reliable than two and a switch.

NEPTUNE Power System: Science Node Converter Startup Operations Design and Implementation Circuit
The North-East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments (NEPTUNE) is an underwater power and communications network for scientific experiments. It is proposed for the ocean floor of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The NEPTUNE power system is a 10 kV dc network. In the science nodes connected to the NEPTUNE network, 10 kV to 400 V dc-dc converters are us...

Spacecraft accelerate by directing propellant in the opposite direction. In the traditional approach, the propellant is carried onboard in the form of material fuel. This approach has the drawback of being limited in Delta v by the amount of fuel launched with the craft, a limit that does not scale well to high Delta v due to the massive nature of the fuel. Directed energy photon propulsion sol...

متن کاملPlanetary migration in a planetesimal disk : why did Neptune stop at 30 AU ?
We study planetary migration in a gas-free disk of planetesimals. In the case of our Solar System we show that Neptune could have had either a damped migration, limited to a few AUs, or a forced migration up to the disk’s edge, depending on the disk’s mass density. We also study the possibility of runaway migration of isolated planets in very massive disk, which might be relevant for extra-sola...
